sump pump failure winter in oswego

What to Do If Your Sump Pump Fails in Freezing Weather

In Oswego, IL, winter weather can bring more than snow; it can also bring serious sump pump problems. If your sump pump fails during a cold snap or snowmelt, you risk basement flooding, mold, and costly repairs.

Here’s how to identify a winter sump pump failure and what to do right away.

Why Do Sump Pumps Fail in Winter?

Even though sump pumps are designed to prevent water damage, winter creates specific risks:

  • Frozen Discharge Lines: If the water can’t exit the discharge pipe due to ice, it backs up into the sump pit.
  • Power Outages: Winter storms can knock out power, shutting off your pump entirely.
  • Pump Burnout: A stuck or overworked pump motor can fail in extreme cold.

Signs Your Sump Pump Has Stopped Working

  • You hear the motor running, but no water is being discharged.
  • Your basement smells musty or feels damp.
  • The sump pit is full of water that’s not draining.
  • Ice is visible around the discharge line outside your home.

What to Do Immediately

1. Check the Power Source

Make sure the sump pump is plugged in and the breaker hasn’t tripped. If your area is experiencing a blackout, consider using a battery backup pump (if installed) or a generator.

2. Inspect the Discharge Pipe

Look outside where the discharge pipe exits your home. If it’s frozen:

  • Pour warm (not boiling) water over the pipe to melt the ice.
  • Use heat tape or insulation to prevent future freezing.

3. Clear the Sump Pit

Remove any debris or ice from the pit that may be blocking the float switch or intake.

4. Use a Backup Solution

If your main pump is down and flooding is imminent:

  • Use a wet/dry shop vac to manually remove water.
  • Place towels and fans to reduce moisture until help arrives.

Preventing Sump Pump Issues in Oswego’s Winters

  • Install a sump pump battery backup system.
  • Add a sump pump heater or wrap your discharge pipe with insulation.
  • Schedule a winter maintenance check before snow season hits.

I had a great experience with Aqueduct. They came by to service my AC unit and were incredibly professional from start to finish. The technician was punctual, explained exactly what was being done, and made sure everything was running efficiently before leaving. It’s a relief to have the system ready for the heat. Highly recommend their services if you want honest work and technical expertise.

We had our water heater go out on Thanksgiving Day. We had a contract with another provider in the area who didn’t have our size water heater in stock and with the storm, no one was available until Monday. I called Aquaduct’s emergency line and received a call back within 5 minutes on a Saturday. After waiting almost two days, they were able to come out within 2 hours and provide a honest quote with breakdown that was easy to understand. We are canceling our contract with the other provider. Very professional and friendly! Highly recommend!!

I have been using Aquaduct plumbing for years now. Jason the Owner is Amazing! Jason always takes the time to answer any questions and always thoroughly explains the work he will be doing. The customer service is also top notch; from the first phone call I make to the office speaking to either Vanessa or Britanny to when Jason and Mike show up at my front door. They all go above and beyond to make calling a plumber less stressful. I highly recommend using this company.
