Cracked pipe from freezing

How to Defrost a Pipe and Prevent Frozen Pipe Damage

When winter hits hard in Oswego and the Fox Valley area, homeowners often face a serious cold-weather plumbing issue: frozen pipes. Learning how to defrost a pipe safely and effectively can help prevent costly water damage and emergency plumbing repairs.

What Causes Pipes to Freeze and Burst?

Pipes typically freeze when exposed to sub-freezing temperatures and water inside the line is not flowing. This often happens in:

  • Uninsulated crawl spaces

  • Exterior walls

  • Attics or basements with poor heating

When water freezes, it expands, putting immense pressure on the pipe’s walls. If the pipe cracks or bursts, you could be facing serious flooding once the ice begins to thaw.

How to Defrost a Pipe Safely

If you suspect you have a frozen pipe, follow these steps to safely defrost a pipe and minimize damage:

1. Check for Pipe Damage First

Before you start thawing, inspect the pipe for any visible cracks, splits, or ice buildup. Do not attempt to defrost a pipe that is visibly damaged—this can lead to major water leaks. Instead, call a licensed plumber immediately.

2. Keep the Faucet Open

Turn on the faucet connected to the frozen pipe. Keeping it open helps relieve pressure and allows melted water to escape as you thaw the blockage.

3. Apply Gentle, Consistent Heat

Use one of the following methods to apply heat directly to the frozen section of the pipe:

  • A hair dryer

  • An electric heating pad

  • A space heater (placed at a safe distance from flammable materials)

Continue heating the pipe until full water pressure returns. This may take time, especially if more than one area is frozen.

4. Call a Professional if Needed

If you’re unable to locate the frozen section, or if thawing doesn’t restore your water flow, it’s time to contact a professional plumber in Oswego or your local Fox Valley area. Our team is available 24/7 to help with frozen pipe emergencies.

What Not to Do When Defrosting a Pipe

To stay safe and protect your plumbing system, never do the following when defrosting a pipe:

  • Do NOT use an open flame, such as a blowtorch, kerosene heater, or propane torch. These can damage your pipes or start a fire.

  • Do NOT thaw pipes with visible ice buildup. Ice on the outside of a pipe often signals a rupture underneath.

  • Do NOT ignore pipe damage—even small cracks can lead to major flooding once thawed.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Prevention is always better than dealing with frozen plumbing in the dead of winter. Here’s how to protect your pipes:

Insulate Your Pipes

Use foam insulation sleeves for pipes in unheated spaces like garages, basements, and attics. Add insulation to walls and around crawl spaces for added protection.

Let Faucets Drip

Allow a slow drip from the faucet farthest from your water source. Constant movement of water helps prevent freezing.

Maintain Home Temperature

Keep your thermostat at 68–70°F, even overnight or when you’re not home. Open cabinet doors to let warm air circulate around plumbing under sinks.

Use Hot Water Recirculation Systems

Thermal recirculating valves or on-demand hot water circulators keep water moving and above freezing, even in the coldest conditions. Though it may slightly increase your utility bill, it can save thousands in repairs.

Cover Outdoor Faucets

Install insulated covers on outdoor spigots and disconnect hoses before the first freeze.

I had a great experience with Aqueduct. They came by to service my AC unit and were incredibly professional from start to finish. The technician was punctual, explained exactly what was being done, and made sure everything was running efficiently before leaving. It’s a relief to have the system ready for the heat. Highly recommend their services if you want honest work and technical expertise.

We had our water heater go out on Thanksgiving Day. We had a contract with another provider in the area who didn’t have our size water heater in stock and with the storm, no one was available until Monday. I called Aquaduct’s emergency line and received a call back within 5 minutes on a Saturday. After waiting almost two days, they were able to come out within 2 hours and provide a honest quote with breakdown that was easy to understand. We are canceling our contract with the other provider. Very professional and friendly! Highly recommend!!

I have been using Aquaduct plumbing for years now. Jason the Owner is Amazing! Jason always takes the time to answer any questions and always thoroughly explains the work he will be doing. The customer service is also top notch; from the first phone call I make to the office speaking to either Vanessa or Britanny to when Jason and Mike show up at my front door. They all go above and beyond to make calling a plumber less stressful. I highly recommend using this company.
